The Doughnut Vault has won the “Best Super Short” Film Award at the Second Annual Chicago Food Film Festival. The film, which documents the sights and sounds of Chicago boutique doughnut seller The Doughnut Vault, premiered in front of a sold-out crowd at Intelligentsia Roasting Works on Chicago’s near west side on November 19th. Guests enjoyed fresh Doughnut Vault doughnuts while the film was playing in what the festival terms “a multi-sensory full-bodied experience.” The weekend-long festival attracted foodies and film enthusiasts alike and guests were invited to “taste what you see on the screen.”
Mode Project director/editor Brooks Ruyle became interested in the tiny cash-only doughnut shop after he noticed they were sold-out within an hour every morning. “As film makers, we’re always looking for stories which can be artfully told,” said Ruyle. “After seeing the festival’s call for entries we knew The Doughnut Vault would be a perfect subject.” In order to become embedded with the doughnut makers, Ruyle used a lightweight DSLR camera, taking advantage of the camera’s excellent low-light capability. “Mode Project captured the essence of what we create at The Doughnut Vault in a beautiful and stylized way,” according to Doughnut Vault owner Brendan Sodikoff. “I love that no one describes how the doughnuts taste in the film, yet by the end the viewer is craving what they’ve seen. It’s a perfect invitation to sample our doughnuts.”
Presented in association with The James Beard Foundation and benefiting The Good Food Project, the Food Film Festival is the brainchild of George Motz, the NYC-based documentary filmmaker behind the award-winning Hamburger America film and book, along with co-creator chef Harry Hawk. 21 films were screened in the competition and the panel of judges included Chicago Tribune writer-columnist Rick Kogan, Chef Michael Kornick of Chicago’s acclaimed MK, and WTTW’s Chief Operating Officer Greg Cameron. “Mode Project is proud to have played a part in making the festival a success… it was a one-of-a-kind event and we’re already thinking about next year,” said director Ruyle.

On the heels of a complete brand redesign, Gogo, the world’s leading provider of inflight connectivity, approached Mode Project to be a creative partner for post-production on their first national broadcast and web campaign. Mode provided Gogo’s in-house creative team with one-stop service, handling all facets of post-production including creative editorial, motion design, color correction and audio mix supervision. “Rolling out multiple national TV and web spots in conjunction with our rebranding is a huge undertaking…” says Heath Miller, Gogo’s VP, Creative, Brand + UX “…using Mode Project as a one-stop-shop made it worry free.” “We are just as comfortable partnering directly with brands as we are working with agencies, and we’re thrilled that Gogo trusted us with their new campaign,” says Mode’s producer Kate Soczka.
Shot in Los Angles with the Arri Alexa, the spots were edited, color-corrected and finished at Mode’s studio in Chicago. Gogo’s new branding uses simplified designs, clean lines, and has an optimistic spirit which is reflected in Mode’s end tag animations. The spots take a humorous approach and feature a variety of quirky characters who delight in their new found productivity at 30,000 feet. From work emails, to social media, to buying a “chandelier made of the antlers of a gazelle,” Gogo allows travelers to use the internet on a plane as they would on the ground. “We wanted to use humor in these spots and Mode really brought that out in the edit.” says Miller.

We’re proud to have been a part of the UN Foundation’s Girl Up campaign, which was recently spotlighted on the PBS Newshour. Partnering with our friends at LKK Media, a media consulting firm based out of Washington, DC, we did all the video animation for the web, mobile and broadcast components of the campaign.
Girl Up is a campaign spearheaded by the UN Foundation which educates adolescent girls in the U.S. about what life is like for their peers in developing countries. “The idea is to build grassroots support among American teens and tweens to help peers in developing countries stay in school, stay free from child labor, and safe from violence,” says Ray Suarez in his report. Since the launch of the campaign, over 200,000 girls across the United Stated have signed up.

In the Coors Light: Search for the Coldest competition, cold is the newest sensation.
Through our agency partner, commonground, we created a fully animated :15 TV promo spot for Coors Light: Search for the Coldest, a competition to open for Hip Hop Rock superstars, N.E.R.D., and Hip Hop group, Pac Div. Along with the promo, we developed a vibrant web teaser incorporating live action footage and graphic animation.
Yung Savolainen, Head of Broadcast at commonground said, “Collaboration is the name of the game. Throw in some creative genius, organization, and the “let’s get it done attitude” and you get a really great end product or in our case over 55 video projects. We came to Mode with a great concept for a :15 sec spot for the Coors Light Search for the Coldest Campaign. We loved the work they did so much that we formed an unofficial Coors Light Search for the Coldest Video coalition, well sort of. The work speaks for itself and I think that after this project we feel more like partners – not a client. ”
At each tour destination, concertgoers interacted with an iPad App containing interviews of artists and tweeted about the concert with animated hashtags we incorporated into the show. N.E.R.D and Pac Div performed in front of looping Coors Light animations we seamlessly integrated with elements from the bands, giving the concert a high-energy, modern vibe.
The verdict? Pretty cold.

Mode Project created unique animations for Ogilvy’s recent roll out of the new UPS ad campaign “We Love Logistics” for a projection display in New York’s Grand Central Station. The projection is part of the campaign’s out-of-home component. We love the clean design elements and enjoyed adding energy by building a complimentary story through motion.
“People often think of logistics simply as moving goods to the right place at the right time,” said Scott Davis, UPS chairman and CEO. “But with more than a century of experience, UPS understands that logistics can be a powerful tool to help businesses get products to market first, gain operational efficiency, save money and improve customer loyalty. Especially in today’s economy, companies need an edge and UPS’ mastery of logistics can give it to them.” Well said, Mr. Chairman. We love logistics too!

Mode Project has won a Gold Award in the PromaxBDA North American Design Awards competition for “David Plouffe: The Art of the Possible”. The video, created as an introduction to President Obama’s campaign manager Plouffe at the 2009 Cannes Festival, was a finalist in two categories: Music Video or Short Subject and Sales or Internal Marketing Presentation (for which it won Gold). Mode Project shared these nominations with such competitors as Optimus, Sony BMG, Fox Broadcasting Company, Showtime Networks and MTV On-Air Promos. An industry standard in excellence, PromaxBDA 2010 is “where the world’s most innovative creatives, marketers, strategists, designers and thought leaders gather”. Mode Project was asked by DDB to highlight Plouffe’s point of view on personal connectivity in political campaigns while introducing him to an international audience that otherwise may not have been familiar with his role in the campaign. Mode Project dug deep into the 400 hours of campaign footage and built a story arc using candidate Obama’s powerful oratory and Plouffe’s YouTube messages to supporters.

We showcased our new 7D test footage – shot outside our office window – at the awesome ProGear event last night.
ProGear invited us to give a seminar on DSLR post work as part of their DSLR Video Nights series. Mode Project gave DSLR users a crash course in production and workflow for video DSLRs with Final Cut Pro. This worked out great for us, considering how much we love working with our new 7D.
The ProGear Video Nights seminar is intended to give photographers and videographers an overview of DSLR cinematography. Subjects range from importing and editing to data safety and Canon equipment.
Mode Project will also be presenting at the last night of the seminar, in which attendees will see an entire 30-second spot go from 3-camera shoot to final product. Awesome!

Our awards for the Titanium and Integrated Grand Prix arrived today! In June, we announced that the work we did on the advertising and marketing campaign that helped propel Barack Obama into the White House had been honored with the two top prizes — the Titanium Grand Prix and the Integrated Grand Prix — from the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. Mode Project was one of the main creative partners in the campaign, assisting its longtime client and the lead agency, AKPD Message and Media. Mode Project oversaw the design of the now famous Obama logo and produced more than 200 broadcast commercials and additional digital content during the course of the primary and general election. Of the Cannes win for Obama for America, Mode Project’s Colin Carter says, “We were honored to be a part of the Obama for America campaign and congratulate everyone on the Obama Media Team in this historic, game-changing endeavor. The Cannes honor is the highest in advertising and knowing we contributed to the successes of the campaign gives us a sense of accomplishment, second only to the election’s outcome.”

You may have noticed in the last month that we’ve refreshed our brand here at Mode Project, and no brand refresh is complete without the addition of new business cards. They just came in, freshly printed courtesy of Rohner Letterpress. They arrived in the nick of time too; our supply of cards to use in the Chipotle free burrito drawing was getting scarcely low.

As it turns out, some of the scenes shot here at Mode for HBO’s By The People: The Election of Barack Obama made the cut! You can see us editing one of the many spots we helped create over the two year course of the election. Film makers Amy Rice and Alicia Sams visited Mode Project several times during the campaign while shooting for the documentary. Be sure to check out tonight’s HBO premiere. We were lucky enough to be able to attend the Chicago screening at the Cadillac Palace Theatre last Friday night, and can’t recommend it enough. The trailer for the film is above if you haven’t seen it already. We’ll be on the lookout for the DVD release next.

OK, you didn’t get a ticket to Cannes (neither did we) but you don’t have to be lugging a delegate bag to see our contribution to the festival. DDB asked Mode Project to create an introductory video and collateral (poster, web banner and print ads) for David Plouffe, Barack Obama’s campaign manager, and his talk on the Audacity of Successful Brands. Mr. Plouffe will be at the Palais in the Debussy Auditorium on Thursday, June 25 at 10:45 a.m. in Cannes. (We’ll be in bed here in Chicago because that’s 3:45 a.m.) Stay tuned, because we’ll post the video on Thursday just as soon as we finish our morning coffee run. It’s a piece that we think people will be talking about. You don’t even have to get on an airplane. Brilliant.

As you can see our intrepid field reporter did make it to DC. Standing among two million of his closest friends, Carl witnessed the Inauguration of the 44th President of the United States (and managed to keep any comments about the “people smell” to himself). It seems that the experience may have snapped him out of his trademark mopiness. Before wandering off to a undisclosed location he told us, “I think things just might possibly be pretty good.” Good to hear, Carl. See a few pics from the trip on flickr or check out the Mode Project twitter feed as Carl makes his way back to Chicago.

As you probably know, It was a rough New Year’s for Carl (check this out if you don’t). Now he’s back and ready for some low-key Inaugural action. But he’s not the most self-motivated snow monster. He’s been dithering at the airport for the past three days. So be sure to give him some words of encouragement at twitter.com/modeproject as he plods his way towards DC for the Inauguration of the 44th President of these United States (aka the President who we did the identity work for).

With all this talk about design and interactivity we decided to pair our recent Processing explorations with video capture and data visualization. If that sounds too complicated, don’t worry. We’re exploring all of these things within the context of slot-cars (the things you either played with or broke as a kid). Check out the work section for pics and footage from the pre-beta launch.

We’re proud to contribute to an effort that is considered to be “a blueprint of political campaigns to come.”

After two weeks of arm-twisting Mode Project was able to wrestle some good copy from David Stevenson, the President of Chicago-based agency twoxfour and lead organizer of the 2008 CCC Awards. Actually, that’s not true. David kindly offered these words a few days after the event:
“Mode Project captured what we wanted the event to be about, which is the Chicago advertising community. The work was elegant and seamless in its concept and performance.”
He then added:
“Mode Project’s design team did a great job of executing the work live. Everything appeared as scripted but the beauty of the processing approach is that it allowed room for spontaneous, unplanned moments that occur during a live show.
Thanks again to twoxfour for the opportunity. We’ll see you next year (at the award show bar).

The program reconstructs the morning of 9/11 in real time, using only audio and video from that morning – no narration, interviews, or after-the-fact commentary. Mode Project did initial design for You Tube and website postings to bring in footage for the program. It’s being aired without commercial interruptions at 9 ET/8 CT.
